Stop-Drive Over Takata: What Owners Should Do Now

With a stop-drive notice the rule is: leave the car parked immediately and arrange the free airbag replacement. This guide explains the individual steps.

A driving-ban notice (“Stop Drive”) over Takata airbags is not routine recall mail. Manufacturers such as Stellantis often send it long before the airbag’s safe service life ends on paper, because the risk of a faulty deployment is too high.

Step by step

  1. Stop driving the vehicle. A driving ban applies until the airbag has been replaced.
  2. Contact your dealer or authorised workshop and book an appointment for the free replacement.
  3. Clarify transport. Following a landmark ruling by the Federal Court of Justice (BGH), a mere recommendation not to drive gives no entitlement to reimbursement of transport costs. Ask about collection or replacement-mobility offers.
  4. Disclose it when selling. If the car is sold, the new owner must know about the open recall.

Is there an official driving ban?

In most cases it is a manufacturer recommendation. For Opel, affected owners in Germany were also written to by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The assessment is made solely by the KBA and the manufacturer.

If you did not receive a letter

If your address data at the registration office is out of date, a recall letter may not reach you. So check yourself: see the guide Check your VIN.
