Citroën C3 and DS 3: Stop Drive After Fatal Takata Accident

After a fatal accident in June 2025, Citroën recommends leaving C3 and DS 3 cars with Takata airbags parked immediately. Around 441,000 vehicles are involved across Europe.

After a fatal accident near Reims in June 2025, Citroën issued a stop-drive order (“Stop Drive”) for the second generation of the C3 and the first generation of the DS 3 with Takata airbags. In France the driving ban was imposed on hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

How many vehicles are affected?

According to reports, around 441,000 vehicles are involved across Europe, about 82,000 of them in France. The initial stop-drive order covered model years 2009 to 2019; other media report that Citroën later included all C3 and DS 3 with Takata airbags. The information therefore differs.

Is this an official driving ban?

No. According to our research this is a manufacturer recommendation, not an official order. For Germany the KBA lists several recalls for the Citroën C3; among them 15237R (published 23 June 2025, C3 type 2, model years 2009–2019) and 14769R for the DS 3. For the C4, DS 4 and DS 5 the KBA notes “Takata Stop Drive, model years 2009 to 2013” in 15396R and 15397R as well; the exact scope is clarified by the VIN check. We have not found a German source on the current status of the stop-drive order – so always check directly with Citroën.

Repair

The replacement is free of charge. According to Citroën, the campaign replaces the driver airbag and – where fitted – the passenger airbag.

What to do?

  1. Check your VIN with the manufacturer.
  2. If it matches, stop using the vehicle and book a workshop appointment.
